The Artist

Artist Statement

"I strive for a balance and symmetry in my art, as I believe these are the essence of life and nature. My mobiles are an expression of this. In the process of balancing my mobiles I am engaged in a study of dynamic equilibrium. Leaning toward any extreme is undesirable, the key is finding the center point where all sides are recognized as indispensable."

When Justina is asked where she's from, there's the short and the long answer. The long answer is she was born in Taiwan, and her family immigrated to Syracuse, NY, when she was nine.

She went on to study Natural Resources at Cornell University. After college, she was married and moved to Taiwan, from which she returned eight years and three kids later. She and her family now live in Ballston Spa, NY, her husband's hometown.

As many crafters also tell the tale, staying home with her children was the primary reason she started her business. With a spark of an idea and much encouragement from her husband, Just Beautiful was kindled.

Justina has always loved to make jewelry to give as gifts. When her sister-in-law mentioned how so many women asked about the origami earrings Justina had given her, it set the wheels in motion. Origami was something she could do that was unique and marketable. It just made sense to put her hobby to work and earn some money. One idea led to another. Inspiration flowed. She traveled the craft show circuit with her wares and was pleasantly surprised with success.

She thought her origami earrings was an original idea when she first started her business. Since then, she has met many fellow artists, broadened her knowledge and has continuously learned new origami skills and models. She is a member of Origami USA and founded the New York Capital Region Origami Society.

Earrings and mobiles are logical progressions for origami. A crane that has been created out of a beautiful piece of paper must be displayed. It is art! One concept easily leads to another. Justina gets many new ideas from her customers as well.

Justina knew what she wanted to be when she grew up -- an artist. Through many winding paths, she has come full circle. She is creating something beautiful, something she is proud of. The things she makes may change and evolve, but for now, she has found her niche.
